iPhone X, a look in the future. So Apple reinvents the smartphone: the preview test

"TEN" and not "X", so the name of the new iPhone, that of the decade, is pronounced. Ten as the ten generations of the device that led to this model from 2007 to date, the first was revealed by Steve Jobs, and on that day the world of consumer electronics has changed forever. And going through the various iterations, up to the current 8 and jumping on the 9th, comes this Ten. Although everyone calls it "Ics" and maybe is not wrong, meaning the letter as the symbol of an important point. And Ten is certainly for Apple itself a milestone in the history of its best-selling product, for reinterpreting the concept of smartphones and for how it gives direction to the technology that will come. A device that in the company's vision "changes everything", to mention a classic Cupertino slogan. It's coming to the shops from November 3rd, we've tried it for preview.

RepTech, here is the iPhone X: Apple looks to the future

· REINVENT THE IPHONE
We had seen it at Steve Jobs Theater last September, we had put our hands on it, we tried it now, pressed for three days, putting the hardware under the pressure, which is based on the A11 Bionic processor, stressing the cameras ( even underwater) and squeezing every drop of battery with the most exquisite apps in terms of performance and data. The idea for "Apple" this time is called Face ID, a sophisticated biometric recognition technology that replaces the user's fingerprint identification but actually does - and will do - much more. Paving the way for ever-deeper personalization of electronic devices. So how is this smartphone that comes with a three-quart number? THE' Apple's goal was to completely redefine its top product without losing anything that made the iPhone one of the icons of the digital era. A very high-risk mission, which can compromise the billionaire budget of the company. The way Apple chose to pursue it is making the device more and more personal, an almost physical object with no physical controls to interact through the look, voice, and touch of the display. iPhone X exists in two colors, space gray and silver, and two memory pieces, 64 and 256 giga. In the hand is like having an ideal cross between an iPhone and the plus model: the physical dimensions are closer to those of the smallest smartphone, but this time it's all display, and the screen area of 5.8 inches is very close to that of the larger model, just a bit ' narrower. But with iPhone X you must first establish visual contact: if you do not look at it, the smartphone will not unlock. Only then can one interact with the screen.

· LOOK INTO MY EYES
This technology is called Face ID and uses a three-dimensional face-detection system at the world's only time: the front camera (called TrueDepth) projects an invisible beam of thirty thousand light points on the face of the user. If what the smartphone sees matches the face stored in the device, then the iPhone opens. Otherwise, the Apple Digital Sesame remains closed. But it works? In our test, Face ID recognized us right after the setup procedure. We tried to deceive you in many ways, using photos, prints, and images on the display of another smartphone to force access, never succeeding, and even with a video to simulate the three-dimensionality. Attempts to unlock with faces of others, about twenty, all failed. We also did the " The system can be deceived "once on a million," Apple says. Those of our test are of course much lower numbers. But what hit us at Face ID is that it did not show any uncertainty in an important situation: the device did not unlock if it was just near and could "see" the face: to do so it is necessary to establish a visual contact and only then does TrueDepth come into operation and make screen, notification, and more visible.

Even from the few applications that use it for the moment, it is understood that this technology is a "game changer", as the English say. The idea is to offer a digital extension with less and less barriers between technology and the user. Hard to go back after interacting for a while: the electronic eye is a technology that, say KGI's well-informed analysts, brings Apple two years ahead of the competition. And also the reason why producing iPhone X has turned out to be very complicated: the 50 million pieces expected within the year, only 30 will actually come out of the Chinese factories that build the product. TrueDepth is a sophisticated innovation, and so are the industrial lines that make it, as well as assembly of components.

· WITHOUT BUTTONS
The "cost" (in addition to the smartphone list) of the Face ID is, however, the disappearance of the Touch ID, the fingerprint reader, on the iPhone 5S today, 8 and 8 Plus still have it. Much of what you used to do with a finger, now you have a look. But in this sense iPhone X goes even further, eliminating the physical keys, replaced by an Oled display where you do everything with a finger. Apple is not new to these subtractions, which are actually replacements, through which it expands its ecosystem, inevitably affecting how much a user has to spend to appreciate it entirely. Recently, the iPhone headphone jack has disappeared from the iPhone and the AirPods were born, wireless headsets, though not costing much, do not know about sales crises. dall ' The colored iMac of the late 90's disappeared from the floppy disk drive and the world shouted at scandal, then the optical readers disappeared. From the iPhone X, the "home" button disappears: the smartphone base is no longer, replaced by the display that now takes the entire body of the phone, except for a small upper area, the "notch" where the sensors reside optical and audio. True, only the home button disappears, the others remain: ignition, volume and silencer. But the usage experience always focuses on the screen, basically you will need to touch the physical buttons to turn on your smartphone or take a screenshot. Everything else can be done on screen or voice, using Siri. To return to the home you will pass your finger from the "home bar" at the bottom of the display upwards, while holding your finger on the display, go to the app switcher to change the application. The habit of the central button disappears shortly afterwards, and the transition to the new interface is simple.

· DISPLAY
But a smartphone besides looking at it, it must also be looked at. On the iPhone X there is a 5.8 inch diagonal 2436x1125 pixel resolution resolution, 458 ppi density, essentially a screen comparable to that of an iPhone Plus (actually higher and a bit narrower) in a chassis of a similar size to that of a "regular" model. Apple calls it Super Retina Display and its direct opponent is the Samsung Galaxy S8 display, which has higher resolution and ppi. Market's irony is exactly Samsung that produces X's display for Apple, but in the case of the new iPhone the technical specifications bend to the system architecture: Apple has integrated Truetone technology into this screen, which reduces white to second of ambient light and supports the P3 color gamut. And compared to the S8, for eyes and color fidelity, X's is the best display for overall performance and adaptability. Truetone in particular is a technology coming from the iPad Pro, and net of pixel numbers is the one that makes a difference, such as reading a long text or working on photo and video apps. Compared to the iPhone 8, the X brings six environmental light detection channels to Truetone, so it has a display that represents an absolute unicum not only in the iPhone range but also in the iPad Pro. is the one that makes a difference, such as reading a long text or working on photo and video apps. Compared to the iPhone 8, the X brings six environmental light detection channels to Truetone, so it has a display that represents an absolute unicum not only in the iPhone range but also in the iPad Pro. is the one that makes a difference, such as reading a long text or working on photo and video apps. Compared to the iPhone 8, the X brings six environmental light detection channels to Truetone, so it has a display that represents an absolute unicum not only in the iPhone range but also in the iPad Pro.  Screen Form factor is ideal in horizontal mode to view 4K HDR content, the effect is that of a pocket movie screen. The "notch" of the sensors remains visible but after a while it is absorbed in the overall look.

· PHOTOCAMER
In the photo gallery, Apple has been working on the dual optics of the iPhone 7 Plus to come up with an advanced X implementation that mounts a 12-megapixel sensor on the back, while the front one acquires the ability to shoot in portrait mode with the new iOS11 lighting effects. On the back, the zoom mode has been improved, the aperture is ƒ / 2.4 and rotates 4K at 60 frames per second and above all it enjoys a dual technically impressive six-magneto optical stabilization for a smartphone camera. Also tune to the signal processor and flash, True Tone with four LEDs. The processor in particular uses the A11 Bionic and Machine Learning to locate the elements of the image you are about to capture, optimizing real-time shooting. There is an increase in performance on autofocus speeds and light shots, and overall, the photographic section is one of the most impressive features of the X.

· BATTERY
In our test, never charging the device, the iPhone X has stood under a medium-high use stress from 8am to midnight. During the day we talked to the phone (with AirPods and then using Bluetooth) for a total of 42 minutes, using the 4G connection, not read on the battery (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Enlight, iMovie, Pinnacle Pro, Monster Park, Garageband) and powered battery power around 20 o'clock. At a rechargeable time when recharging the battery when it is needed, iPhone X should be over a day without leaving the user dry, and even though iOS11, here in version 11.1, does not yet appear well-optimized on consumption. In this good behavior the Oled screen plays very much, which turns off pixels when it displays black, cutting consumption as it already happens on competing devices. And as with the 8 Series models, iPhone X supports fast and wireless charging. With special accessories you can charge your smartphone by hanging it without connecting cables.

· IN CONCLUSION
If Apple's goal was to redefine the iPhone without distorting it and inaugurating a platform unless for the next ten years, at least for the next five, the iPhone X is aiming for the goal without any difficulty. In a world where smartphone innovations are necessarily always incremental and only occasionally truly revolutionary, Face ID implementation, coupled with the capabilities of the A11 Bionic chip and the optimization of the iOS operating system on the Increased Reality and Machine Learning slots, make Ten together a point of arrival, turning for the whole sector, and restarting. It's not hard to predict how the X shows up on tablets and computers, and how the whole industry will rotate, improving what it offers and relaunching on other issues. But if Ten is certainly the state of Apple's smartphone art, it has its weaknesses. One on all: One Face can be stored in the Face ID. This is related to how the system is designed and works, to avoid slowdowns, confusion and locks, and is presumably a limitation that can be overcome in future versions of iOS. With the Touch ID, for example, you could add up to 5 fingerprints, a convenient system for securing access even to a second person, who with iPhone X will have to type the code with all the concerns about the privacy of the case. Still, it's no longer possible to unlock the iPhone without looking at it, and there certainly should not be times when this is needed, but with Touch ID it was possible and convenient. Then there is the price, which is a top of the range that is also a luxury item: Prices range from 1189 euros to 64gb at the top of the range of 1359 euros, which can be added to Applecare's additional warranty, 229 euros. Original covers range from 45 euros to 59 in silicone leather, and then there is a 109 euro leather case. In short, wanting to take the complete X package, 1697 euros come from the piglet. Net of accessories and warranties, the iPhone X costs just over 8 Plus and is marginally more expensive than the models In short, wanting to take the complete X package, 1697 euros come from the piglet. Net of accessories and warranties, the iPhone X costs just over 8 Plus and is marginally more expensive than the models In short, wanting to take the complete X package, 1697 euros come from the piglet. Net of accessories and warranties, the iPhone X costs just over 8 Plus and is marginally more expensive than the models flagship  of Android smartphone manufacturers. In the final price we go to the premium status that accompanies the Apple brand from the first day and the years in research, development and production of a highly advanced overall technology with some elements present in the market only on this iPhone. And it lives on a sought-after harmony, and above all solid between hardware and operating system. In the name there is an X that also indicates where Apple thinks it's the treasure, or hardware, software, and vision on how devices can increasingly integrate with our existences. What we will see in the near future will inevitably depart from here.
